It is never old-fashioned to use old sayings in modern business

Old sayings are based on experiences and knowledge about regular  and simple things. Apply them to modern business is not difficult because they are common sense; they are adaptable to any circumstance.

A. “Choose the hills wisely on which you must do battle” – Unknown

You need a real knowledge about the business you are in, your competitors, their weaknesses and their strengths; your own weaknesses and strengths, differences and similarities, your market, your location, etc. Controls achieved with this knowledge, will help you to choose your business ideal “battlefield”, certainty will allow command wisely, and then, the battle called success, will be won.

B. “Focus on what’s right in your world instead of what’s wrong”     – Unknown

Observe, yes the word is OBSERVE: the act of viewing a FACT or occurrence for specific purposes. Of course, errors can be committed, but, when you OBSERVE, you will spot immediately what you did RIGHT, so instead to “fix” the mistake, you will support the right actions, for example, your sales are up this month, but you lost one client, instead, to focus on your “loss”, find the actions which help to increase your sales, repeat them and support them, when you do this, it is possible that the reason why you lost your customer can be corrected at the same time.

C. “Never spend your money before you have it”      – Unknown

Do not compromise your future; if you can work with materials, equipments or tools that you already have, you do not need to buy nothing fancy (“thinking in the future”). A health advice is reserve money for your future; the difference between spending and reserve, the first one is gone the other one will be there when you need it.

D. “The only real test in life is to conquer your fears”     – Unknown

Of course you can be afraid with this new adventure, but remember fear is the stop sign of any success, you do not move, you do not act, you have the “but” condition injected into your mind. Do not allow your fears tie your future, and also you do not let others bring their fears to your space. Conquer your fears with knowledge, simple like that, the more you know, bolder and successful you will be.

E. “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

Do I have to explain this one? If the future doesn’t exist yet, how something which is immaterial can have limits? Is like playing a game, you don’t know who is going to win, but this doesn’t mean that the game has not rules, players, physical space; you do not know the outcome until is over; but remember, the game is won by the one who plays better. Take the decisions today, is your game, is your business.

F.  “If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it. The more things you do, the more you can do” – Lucille Ball

“The more we do, the more we can do” – William Hazlett.

Both quotes are totally true, but the central point is “more you do, more you learn, the more you can do”,

We are not talking about the “busy” people who are not productive. These people stay late at the office, never have time period, they are always up with work, but they are not productive because they make bad decisions on the tasks to be performed or they do not know how to do them and at the end, they don’t have results.

We are talking about people who, despite having much work to do, they know how being more productive. Productivity is all about efficiency, which is nothing but the best use of available resources to obtain desired results. The scale for measuring productivity is not the amount of hours worked or the amount of work you have, is the deep knowledge about what you are doing.

Is like driving, more you drive, more you learn how to do it, and less you have to think about the procedures; -“now I have to push the brakes“-, -“turn the wheel to go to the right“-, you are not thinking, you are driving; in other words “The more things you do, the more you can do” because you know best.

Be efficient, be productive, and that is when something will be done!
